Win Apocalypse Now Blu-ray
Heralded by many as the film that crystallises most perfectly the experience of the Vietnam War, Francis Ford Coppola's hallucinatory masterpiece Apocalypse Now has been painstakingly restored by his own Zoetrope studios under his close supervision, and is released on a 3-disc Special Edition Blu-ray on June 13th, priced £29.99.
This collector's edition includes Apocalypse Now and Apocalypse Now Redux, both in their original theatrical aspect ratios, with more than nine hours of bonus material including new interviews with on-screen and behind-the-scenes talent, as well as the acclaimed making-of feature documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse.
In addition, this version features a 24-page printed booklet containing an introductory letter written by Coppola with personal accounts of the making of the film, extracts from the original screenplay with Coppola's handwritten notes, and original drawings of the film's storyboard. There is also the 1979 Theatrical Program (16 pages), five exclusive postcards including behind-the-scenes photos taken by famed American photographer Mary Ellen Mark.
Tony Lee reviews this release in Black Static issue 23 (June–July): "This is the greatest war movie ever made, a work which transcends all familiar cross-genre classics, from black comedy (like Dr Strangelove or Catch-22) to existential horror (Paths of Glory), and it is now obviously a work of Art that’s influenced everything from Stone’s Platoon and Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, to Air America and Jacob’s Ladder … It’s simply one of the ten greatest movies."
Courtesy of Optimum Releasing we have three copies to give away to Black Static subscribers. All you have to do is write the answer to this simple question – who plays Colonel Kurtz? – along with your postal address, in the Comments field of the form below. (Fill out the other fields too, of course!) The competition closes at midnight GMT on June 13th, so be quick!
