Bonus Material Black Static #82/83: Steve Rasnic Tem
In the current issue of the magazine (#82/83) I review Steve Rasnic Tem's short story collection The Night Doctor and Other Tales, which contained three stories I chose not to discuss as I'd already reviewed them previously.
For the sake of completeness, I've decided to post my reviews of those stories as they originally appeared.
From my Black Static #35 review of Shadows Edge edited by Simon Strantzas:-
An encounter with a homeless man opens the eyes of the protagonist of 'Lost in the Garden of Earthly Delights' by Steve Rasnic Tem to the idea of many realities, including those in which stories might be the truth and vice versa, the piece beautifully written but to my mind not really going anywhere, doing little more than present the concept.
From my Black Static #56 review of Uncertainties Volume 2 edited by Brian J. Showers:-
'Half-Light' by Steve Rasnic Tem is a brief portrait of a woman on her last legs, her spirit reaching a state of peace with the life she has lived and fighting the doctors to bring it to an end, the story poignant and moving.
From my Black Static #32 review of Magic edited by Jonathan Oliver:-
'Domestic Magic' by Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem depicts the downside of having a witch for a mother, showing how children are neglected thanks to her focus on higher things and ending with a note that implies an ordinary life might be much better after all, the witch shown as almost akin to somebody with mental health problems. Bewitched this ain't.
