From a book read recently:-

'...most of Howard's friends were rift raft looking for a place...'

'...they were able to mingle with the populous'

So, this kid buys a can of soda, but later in the day he has change from 'his purchase of a sofa...'

I'll ask my students, Ali, they use it all the time. Sorry, allthetime.

Oh, dear - this from the editorial statement from a new mag:

There are tons of Literary magazines in the world because there are even more writers looking for a place to publish themselves and have their name become knew.

The joy of reading and writing flows through our blood and takes us on a world wind each and every day.

Not a typo, but amusing all the same and something which would probably be edited differently nowadays. From "The 39 Steps" by John Buchan: "Then began an unholy row. They were all on me at once, and the policeman took me in the rear. I got in one or two good blows, for I think, with fair play, I could have licked the lot of them..."

There were some good bits like that in Stand By For Mars, a book for boys from the fifties. For example: "There was a long moment of silence while Strong lifted one knee, swung it over the arm of his chair, and looked steadily at the two half-naked boys in front of him. He smiled lazily."

For my English standard grade in '97 the text was:

Johnny was a bender. He spent all day bending over for Mr. Idunno in his shop.

So, of course, to a room full of fifteen year olds this was hilarious and not very conducive to sitting an exam.

Not a typo, but if we're going back to schooldays, a boy in my form claimed that the English teacher had described his writing as 'erotic'. On further investigation, it turned out that what she'd actually written was 'erratic'.

Just stumbled across this on the First Eastern Counties website:-

First has produced and presented a "quality charter"pledging - and detailing - improvements to bus passengers in Norwich and Norfolk.

As a regular bus passenger I can't wait to be improved

I recall one of my classmates altering his report to read "his appearance in school is erotic".

Somebody unhappy with a review on my blog said:

"The comments you made are very rude and without presidents."

So Monday I post the gaff from the First Eastern Counties website, and today my bus doesn't turn up.

I'm taking it as personal
