There's a good title for an anthology - 'Hacked To Death - schlocky horror from the genre's greatest hacks.'

I'd buy it. 8)

I don't know if my roommate's love for ancient shlocky horror films extends to books and stories, but it might be something she would read.

Myself, it's not to my taste at all. But then I always preferred classical styles.

And I like the idea of a 'what are you writing' thread.

I wasn't being entirely serious there, you know!

Anyway - finished the horror short I've been working on, decided to send it Black Static's way first in the end - always a tough sell but you've got to be in it to win it, right?

Now having a stab at a submission for a cat themed anthology announced at www.darkwineandstars.blogspot.com

Makes a nice change to write something that isn't horror or SF, even if my piece is shaping up pretty damn weird regardless...

Makes me wish I still wrote shorts, LC.

Yes, I knew you were joking. But sometimes I am just too literal. I have written maybe six or seven shorts in the last ten years. Sold the only one I submitted to anything and put the rest up on my website as free reads.

I've gotten too long winded in my old age. Right now I'm working on a novel "The Loyalty of Wolves."

To be honest I wish I had the discipline to stop faffing about and write something with serious length.I've got a couple of vague outlines for novels but I haven't had the balls to start either yet.

Instead I spent the day writing a couple of 500 word flash fiction pieces. The first of which 'Attack of the Ghouls' (which honestly isn't as cheesy as it sounds!) has already been accepted by Pill Hill Press for their 'Daily Flash Anthology' within three hours of submitting, which is a new record for me.

Nice sale. Having something accepted that fast is always satisfying.

At the moment I've put aside two science fiction drafts. Let it sit for three, four weeks. One is called "Salvation from an Impossible Future", and it's about a man who goes back in time to retrieve people living in shanties in the midwest, broke and down on their luck, practically naked and starving to death and gives them "an offer." --- That offer is to come with him through a time tunnel three hundred years into the future where Mars has long been colonized, the waters and air purified, climactic changes modified, and where these people from the 1930's can be taught futuristic engineering skills and help build Mars up further and "procreate." But while living on Mars and temporal engineering is possible, what happened to the Earth in-between all this that humans from Mars have to go back in time to retrieve folks for this project?

At the moment, still pondering THE WATERS OF EUROPA.

And working on a novelette, part horror-thriller, very intense, about a man who used to rape a runaway girl when she was only eighteen, impregnated her with two kids, and she managed to get away from him and start a new life. It's eight years later. The man is back, and he wants to SEE his family. He's holding the children hostage and can't wait to be reunited with Mommy in... FAMILY REUNION. I'll show this story to my editor when I'm done; it may go into the second collection.

It makes a nice change - at the opposite end of the scale I've just had a short story rejected after 516 days of sitting on the 'short list' for a forthcoming anthology. Ah well, such things are sent to try us.

Anyway - back on the 'currently writing' front I'm now back in horror mode, about halfway through a story provisionally entitled 'The Thing on the Beach' that I'm hoping to submit to Harrow Press' 'Day Terrors' anthology. Onwards and upwards.

I'm still slogging away at The Loyalty of Wolves. It's just passed the 100k mark. If it runs too long, I will have to look for a place to break it in half. That's not always easy to do. My last publisher used to get insane breaking my books in half in what I considered an arbitrary fashion. The main thing is that while they are thick, they are tight.

Against all odds, I now find myself in the curious position of writing not one but two tales of erotic zombie horror, with deadlines rapidly approaching for two completely unrelated publications. One is of a heterosexual nature and set in the present day, the other is of a homosexual bent and set in Victorian England. Both are more scary than smutty. I'm hoping to actually give people the willies, rather than just wave them about.
Insert your own joke about whether I can 'pull it off' here.

I have a character, Darcy, who cuts them off and pickles them as trophies in Loyalty. She's a mess.

Steven and I decided to break Loyalty in half and it actually works better at this point. He's also happily slicing out all of my American phrasing in the lycan dialog since they are supposed to be Gaelic/British immigrants to that world. We had a solid row over my calling the character Darcy.

I'm currently writing VERY URGENT protest emails, to try and prevent the planet's most backward, third-world shithole from murdering yet another political prisoner:

Quote:
EMERGENCY CUBA UPDATE, Sunday 1 August 2010

1. URGENT ACTION FOR MIAMI 5 PRISONER GERARDO HERNANDEZ - PLEASE ACT NOW

Gerardo Hernandez, one of the Miami 5 imprisoned in the US for fighting
terrorism, is suffering under another punishment from the US government.

Since 21 July, Gerardo has been held in the ‘hole’ – a windowless cell of
7x3 feet which he shares with another prisoner, with little ventilation and
reaching temperatures of 95 degrees.

He is unable to take a shower and is taken outside in a cage for just one hour
every other day.

Not only is this cruel punishment being imposed without explanation, and
preventing Gerardo from seeing his lawyers at a crucial stage in his
preparation for Habeas Corpus, but it has also been imposed while Gerardo is
experiencing health problems.

In April Gerardo requested a medical appointment for medical conditions
developed while in prison, including high blood pressure. Three months later,
on 20 July 2010 he was seen by a doctor. The doctor prescribed a blood test for
a bacterium which is circulating throughout the prison, but instead, the
following day, 21 July 2010, Gerardo was put in the hole.

This is the third time in Gerardo’s twelve years in prison that he has been
placed in the hole while preparing for an appeal. He is currently unable to see
or have any contact with this legal team while under this inhumane treatment.

This inhumane punishment is another in the repeated violations of his human
rights while in USP Victorville in California. For twelve years, the US
government has denied him the basic right to receive visits from his wife
Adriana.

Please take urgent action on behalf of Gerardo today. Please, write, email or
fax the three contacts below today and demand that Gerardo be:

• Returned immediately to the general population
• Receive urgent medical attention
• Allowed visits by his wife Adriana Perez
• Given space and respect as he prepares for his appeals

Washington, DC 20530-0001

Email: AskDOJ@usdoj.gov.

Please feel free to write in your own words or use the sample letter below.

Dear [insert relevant name]

I am writing to you with urgent concern for Gerardo Hernandez who is serving a
double life sentence in USP Victorville. I understand that he has been confined
to the hole since 21 July 2010 and I am deeply concerned that he has not
received adequate medical care for his health problems or the blood test
prescribed by the prison doctor on 20 July 2010.

Gerardo is also currently preparing for Habeas Corpus with his lawyers and
while held under these conditions he has been denied contact with them during
this vital stage in his appeal.

I urge the authories to ensure that Gerardo Hernandez be:

• Returned immediately to the general prison population
• Receive urgent medical attention
• Allowed visits by his wife Adriana Perez
• Given space and respect as he prepares for his appeals

I believe the US government and prison authorities hold responsibility for the
life and physical wellbeing of Gerardo Hernandez and I sincerely hope swift
action will be taken.
Thank you for giving this matter your urgent attention, I look forward to your
response.

Yours sincerely

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THIS ACTION - PLEASE FORWARD IT AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE.

Currently working on a thousand words about the BFS for the FantasyCon souvenir booklet. It's an interesting challenge.

Thanks to personal problems I had completely stalled over the past four months, so I'm very pleased to FINALLY have got my act together and start writing again. OK, so I missed the deadline on the piece I just finished by 3 months, but it's a start! :)

Lot of people writing things with horror and zombies. Anyone writing about love and romance....

Okay, I'll take back that comment before I'm leached by the writers mob...

For me, I'm working on something that has been scrounged up from the deepest recesses of my mind... Two words.

Strawberry Vale...
Ummm, I'll let you guess what that’s about...
