A 'you cannot be serious' moment over at SF Crowsnest:-

http://www.sfcrowsnest.com/bookreview.php

Possibly a 'joke' attempt to discourage an influx of self-published stuff, but all the same, I believe Andy sends them Interzone so wondering if TTA will now be expected to pay.

Not a joke, I think - I tried the PayPal button and it works. And Kirkus and PW offer similar services...

You could get 60 of these for that price: http://fiverr.com/gigs/search?query=ama ... &x=20&y=14

They appear to have come to their senses and taken it down.

Here's the Kirkus one. http://www.kirkusreviews.com/indie/about/

They don't even offer you a discount if you write your own review. #-o

I've been getting mired in fiverr... It's so utterly corrupt. For example, look at this job offer:

http://fiverr.com/busymommy/review-your ... l-networks

One of the people thanking her for doing a great job has the username rkagan, and signs off as roberta. Searching for Roberta Kagan brings up this book:

http://www.amazon.com/A-Flicker-of-Ligh ... RU1MQV6VH7

Where you can see the bafflement of "Liz Bennet" at all the five star reviews the book has had, and the author getting snippy about the review. (I'm afraid I chipped in, which never goes well!)

I also enjoyed this argument, between the different people paid to edit that book:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1NN5G9UFU ... hisHelpful

I especially liked this comment from Ms Bennet:

Quote:
As to the 5-star reviewers: You are either dishonest, or simple-minded. Feel free to comment, the quality of your reply will easily determine which group you belong to.

She also does this:-

http://fiverr.com/busymommy/comment-on- ... our-choice

Suddenly I understand why John Scalzi gets a gazillion times more comments on his blog than I do, even though none of his posts are about me.

Oh, wheeze idea - a blog post denouncing corrupt review practices, and then pay her to comment on it.

You get plenty... In fact I liked it better when it was just you and me. \:D/

You don't really care. You're just miffed at the loss of a revenue stream.

Going back to the Kirkus link, I notice it's only for self-published books, so possibly in place as a deterrent, at least in part.

Geoff at Crowsnest seemed to be expecting this for every book, regardless of origin.

You can now get reviews over at my blog for the paltry sum of £1,000 per go. They'll be positive and full of praise and you don't even have to send me your book as I won't need to read it, actually you don't even have to write one, just send me the money :P

More about paid reviews:-

http://michelegormanwriter.blogspot.co. ... views.html

I'm disappointed. I thought the ChickLit crowd were better than us.

And also paid blog tours:-

And there you see the pernicious effect of stuff like Kirkus Indie Review. The blogger demanding a fee for a crappy puff piece can point to them as an example. They do it, why shouldn't we?

I'm thinking it might be an idea to charge authors a 'good behaviour' deposit, refundable a year after the review has been published if they haven't had a meltdown in that time

Regarding the blog tour thing, you could make a case for them performing the same PR function for self-published authors as publicists do for those signed with a mainstream house, it's just that looking at the results in the second blog post on the subject it's hard to see how this blog tour co-ordinator justifies their fee.

In the circumstances, Fiverr seems like a bargain at half the price

More review shenanigans:-

http://jerrodbalzer.com/warning-book-review-scam/

They'll write the review for you. You just need to post it and get paid.
