I kid you not. Android Karenina. A great big steampunk adventure on the 100th anniversary of Tolstoy's death, from the people who brought you Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Speaking of which, apparently there is a P&P&Z film in the pipeline, staring Natalie Portman.

I hope this is not for real, but I tend to believe you. I also hope that nobody gets the idea that Mr Karenin in Tolstoy's novel is an androidal entity that acts like a programmed robot. In my opinion he is the most significant character in that great book. OK, he neglects his wife (who takes appropriate countermeasures), but his lifestyle is exemplary. He is a conscientious civil servant who works hard and keeps regular office hours. Such behaviour is quite different from that of all those titled and untitled government employees who populate classical Russian literature. They are parasites who fritter their time away at innumerable parties, balls, and other occasions for goofing off. The Intelligentsia despised them. A great Russian critic dubbed them "superfluous people." Well, I just wanted to set the record straight. Any film (or whatever it is) that portrays him as a bore gets thumbs down from me.
