I read Asimov's Foundation trilogy in 1957 or 58. Until about 1965 the only history I knew was the stuff taught under that heading in my NYC high school and college. My friends and I were interested in the hard sciences and referred to the humanities as 'weak shit.' Later I heard about the influences of Gibbon and Marx on these works. Much later I read both great thinkers. But it was not until last year that I read the classical paper about their influences on Asimov. Professor Emeritus Darko Suvin sent it to me. Since it seems to be little known now (I remember hearing about it years ago), I decided to link to Charles Elkins' important paper.

Thanks for this, George. Asimov was a big influence on me in one respect. When, in my youth, I discovered that he had modelled his structure on Decline and Fall I suddenly realised that you were allowed to do that sort of thing.
