Does the sudden hiatus mean I'm not the only one going 'huh'??

No, it just means that it's a good point and no one has a solution just yet :)

Inevitable Wikipedia link

If every single plank of wood that makes up a ship is replaced over a number of years, one piece at a time, but the design and use of the ship doesn't change, is it still the same ship? If not, when does it start being a different ship?

Hence the molecules thing. If none of the molecules in your body are those you're born with, does it matter that when you get 'beamed' your data signature is transmitted and reassembled, while the original is destroyed.

Suppose it applies to clones, too. If someone has exactly the same DNA as you, are they the same person? Does being the original make you the 'right' one?

The sort of sf-nal philosophy point that late-night drinking at cons is made for, in fact. :)

Thanks for the link, Foxie.
I now get the Granny's broom reference, at least.

Now wondering if said broom has a sense of identity, and whether 'same' should be defined relative to the onlooker/observer or relative to the subject. And whether late night drinking is over-rated...
