It's a proper movie in the midst of summer blockbuster season. However, as a rerun of Heat (cop and criminal being fellow professionals on either side of the law) it doesn't quite come off, partly because Christian Bale's role is underwritten and he and Depp just don't have the weight of presence that DeNiro and Pacino brought to Heat.
Also, I'm not convinced by Mann's recent experiments with shooting (mostly) on High-def video. It worked in Collateral - those night-time cityscapes were amazing - but I'm not convinced it works here. I saw the film projected off 35mm - it may look better in a digital presentation - on on Blu-ray for that matter.
Recommended with reservations.
