I read on AICN that Daft Punk are doing the soundtrack, so even if the film's rubbish we'll get a good album out of it! But so far it seems like they're doing everything right...

I can barely remember the original, but the trailer for this looks promising, and there'll be a 3D version, so fingers crossed for something worth seeing.

I remember enough of the original to recall how monumentally daft the concept was. But it was fun. And the graphics were amazing compared to what we had on our ZX Spectrums/Commodore 64s etc. at the time. Set & costume design was by Jean Giraud (aka Moebius), and Syd Mead (of Blade Runner fame) designed the vehicles.

I actually re-watched the original the other night (have the cleaned-up version on DVD). Yes it was a silly concept, but no worse than The Last Starfighter or Flight of the Navigator. The whole thing scrubs up well, graphics and sets still look as good as they did back in the early eighties. I guess the good thing about low-tech effects is that they don't really age. It's great fun with good guys and bad guys and interesting enough for me to come back to it as an adult and not be bored to tears.
It's going to be hard to srew up a sequal, but that's something Hollywood seem to excel at. If they try and update it, it's going to lose its charm. If they rehash it, then it's going to be a poor copy.
Kudos to getting Jeff Bridges (original cast member) on board. Good sign. Mind you, didn't help The Lawnmower Man, did it?

Jeff Fahey was in "Lawnmower Man", but I don't recall Jeff Bridges.

Jeff Bridges was in the original Tron. I thought Pierce Brosnon was in the sequal to Lawnmower Man, but apparently he wasn't. If he was, then having original cast members back for the sequal wouldn't mean that the sequal is any good. Mind you, plenty other evidence out there, I suppose.

Ah, got you. I read your comment to mean Jeff Bridges was in "Lawnmower Man" as well as "Tron", and it was his presence that didn't help
