Despite initial misgivings after some negative reviews I ended up rather enjoying this unassming comedy thriller. As the eponymous peace officer Kevin James has a little of the charm that producer Adam Sandler is frequently unable to command when before the camera on his own account and, while the film is handicapped by low budget in some departments, it runs smoothly enough - although the final third could have done with more suspense. Some critics have zeroed in on the fat jokes and stereotypes but, on closer examination, Blart arguably represents an empowerment rather than a denial of heavier characters, who can learn to find happiness on their own terms.
Most of interest is the film's quiet homage thoughout to the (mainly first two) Die Hard films. The referencing of some key elements and scenes will bring a quiet smile to face of those familiar to the older action classics.
