Adaption faithfulness is an interesting argument on its own. Perhaps steampunking is faithful to to the intention of the story. After all, they did have (basic) steam power in the era it was set.
As for [url="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ValuesDissonance"]Values Dissonance[/url], I think we can expect people to edit out. Although Athos being judge and jury (and paying the executioner) is a mark of how truly noble the man is...
