Any fans of this show out there?

I didn't like what Russell T. Davies did with Doctor Who, so was glad to avoid Torchwood on TV (did I really miss anything?), but since then, I've thought about renting it on DVD.

Is it actually worth the trouble?
:?

Tourchwood was the worst, worst, worst thing that I have ever seen. Chris Chibnil needs to be hung, drawn and quartered for what he did with that show.

There are five people (I won't say characters) who blunder around Cardiff, swearing like they're fourteen, with the combined intellectual capacity of a ten year-old and the emotional maturity of my pet cat (the one who keeps spraying on the drum kit). The dialogue is horrendous, and the plots seem stolen from the back of a nine-year-old's exercise book. Seriously, I'm not using hyperbole. Cyberwoman and End of Days would, I'm sure, be in the top ten of 'worst T.V. moments ever', spanning the whole history of the medium. They don't even have any redeeming value in them, the way Plan 9 or Queen of Outer Space does. The only thing you can learn is your endurance for torture.

Anyway, I won't rant any more. I've done enough of that, and if I feel the need, there's always OG. Oh, speaking of which, I'm not a huge RTD fan, either. It's gone from being sci-fi to Eastenders in Space. Why does everyone fall in love with the Doctor?

I agree unconditionally.

Which is ironic considering the episode he wrote for Life on Mars was pretty good.

I agree, though, Torchwood was - in the main - purile; a so-called adult attempt at some sort of supernatural show, yet in the eyes of RTD, Chibnal and the Beeb adult equated to plenty of sex and profanity at the expense of good storytelling and acting.

Yes, most of it was shite, but there was an arc of two or three stories starting with 'They Keep Killing Susie' and ending with 'Combat' when it looked like it was going to get good, despite itself.

What happened?

Chibnall, that's what happened.

Interesting. I'm not as down on the series as the rest I guess. Yes, the acting is absolutely over-the-top and they can't decide if they want to be a steamy soap opera, a sci-fi thriller, or a comedy. But I watch it the way people watch bad reality TV shows; I want to see just how ridiculous it can get.
