I don't know Peace, but without any context that passage could be read as implying almost the opposite: that the (notional) author would be more honest if they wrote science fiction, but they don't because it's underpaid...

I thought DP was just saying he wants to read books by people with a bit of passion for the genre in which they are writing, as opposed to those who simply chase the money (whatever genre it's in). A swipe at formulaic wrting rather than a specific genre?
