Colin Harvey's review of BS13 on Suite 101. No story gets less than a "Highly Recommended".

I quite like the Carole Johnstone story.
It had me going through the OED online to find out what 'Mako' meant?
Not quite sure about the ending though?

I absolutely loved the James Cooper story. I'll definitely be seeking out the collection.

The Tim Lees story didn't quite work for me.
I was a bit distracted by the sleeping bag in the bushes. It didn't seem to do anything in the story at all?
I liked the way the children shimmered into view but it was overworked in getting a penny from every student at the end. I'm not too sure about they took over in one or two small places, every now and then. Is this the children or the demon? The demom manifesting as children beomes just too blurred for me. For it too have been stronger I think there should have been a clear demarcation by the end between the demon and its manifestation as children.

Haven't received my copy of BS 13 yet, Andy. I'm wondering if the postal strike is to blame.

Paul – get it straight. The postal strike may be the immediate cause of the non-appearance of your copy of BS 13, but the strike is not to blame. Adam Crozier and Peter Mandelson are to blame.

I was deliberately trying not to personalise it, Joel. I was blaming a phenomena rather than an individual. But you're right, of course. They're both cunts.

Well, I appear to be more angry about not getting my copy of Black Static 13 than I realised.

Hey Paul, my man - a typo above, lest readers learn bad habits from this forum - God forbid. The singular of "phenomena" is "phenomenon". :-) ...which is the smug face I'm wearing right now.

Generally: I wonder why "Suite 101" consistently give a really bad description of my Electric Darkness columns? I don't think that's what they're about at all.

Black Static #13:

Once again, all the regular features and reviews are exemplary and equally as enjoyable as the fiction.

"Cuckoos" - thoroughly enjoyed this one which was pitched just right. The children subtly infiltrate both the story and the actual telling of the story. And whilst the metaphor could have been clumsy, it's handled very well.

"The Shadow Keeper" - I think this is the best Kim Lakin-Smith story I've read. Superbly written, tragic, and heart-breaking.

"Dead Loss" - thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive prose in this story which powers it along. The final paragraph thoroughly hammering the story home.

"Some Of Them Fall" - Clearly a Joel Lane story even if I had been unaware of that. Some beautiful prose runs through this compelling story.

"My Secret Children" - a real gem. The father's desperation at the end is searingly palpable. I loved it.

Overall, another very strong issue. Must admit the cover did it less for me this time around, but that's a minor criticism indeed.

Hey, Steve. Kind of you to assume it's a typo. It's not. I'm just an ignorami.

Your copy definitely left here, Paul. Better email me your new address again so I can check I've got it right -- will resend of course.

The Shadow Keepers story I found quite lively and entertaining. Could have been a bit more from the big girl though I thought.
