Another solid issue, folks. I think "Two Houses Away" has to be my favorite of the bunch. To put it in non-spoiler terms, the way it ended made it lodge in my mind for some time.

Not so much a review as an overview, Elaine Lamkin says some extremely nice things about Black Static on Dread Central.

I really enjoyed Barbary by Jackson, great story! When I started reading Stephen Pirie's story I couldn't get into it, but then as it went on it quickly changed my mind and I ended up really liking it. :)
In Issue #30 Stephen Volk had me really interested in his Ghostwatch, and now reading more about it in this one I'm really interested in seeing it. I was either too young or didn't know about it at the time so I feel as if I've missed out.. :( lol

Black Static 31 on Smashwords just in time for Christmas but until Andy sends me a new password for the Amazon account there will be no official Kindle version. PS you can get a KIndle version from Smashwords.

A brilliant issue. Barbary is a stunner - excellent story, and I too would have been happy to read a whole novel like this, though the story worked perfectly at this length.

I enjoyed all the stories in the issue, but Two Houses Away and The Things That Get You Through were my other favourites.

At last I got the new password and hence uploaded Black Static 31 to Amazon. Look inside and and you can see Fergus Beadle's fine photo of a group of TTA's young new authors and an old bloke whose shirt matches his chapbook. Here are the links to and

I'm a little late with my thoughts (I still had 1 story to read before posting), but here they are for what they're worth.

I found "Barbary" a little hard to get into at first, but well worth persevering with - my favourite of the issue.

"Sister" - liked the voice of this piece; enjoyable story.

"The Perils of War..." - another good one. Liked the snapshot structure.

"Skein and Bone" - slow build-up (although well-written), strong ending with some lovely imagery.

"Two Houses Away" - the opposite, great build-up but the ending didn't quite work for me.

Overall, very good. And I didn't have a problem with the recurring use of mannequins in this issue. :)
