Inspired by the 'listening to' thread, I was wondering if you all have favourites you like to write to, or music that has inspired a story more directly...

Metal Machine Music. It also has the advantage of making all cats leave the room.

I make soundtracks depending on what I'm writing, sometimes it takes me an hour or two lol

I get distracted enough as it is. I usually put my fingers in my ears to shut out any outside influence and type with my elbows. Now you know why I 've only managed to get one novel published....
(well, that's my excuse)

I'm with Bob on this - no outside distractions. I'm also the sort of purist who thinks that if writing/listening to music is worth doing then it deserves the whole of your attention, not just part.
I have had some great ideas come to me though while listening to Patti Smith and Tchaikovsky (not at the same time).

Yeah me too.
Silence. Absolute silence. I even get all grumpy if I can hear the telly from downstairs.

I used to write to music but now tend to listen to it and think then write later without it. My worry is that the music will do the atmosphere while I write and I'll forget to do my bit.
I used to do the soundtrack thing though. 'Now that's what I call music to write to' and 'The Best Writing Music Ever, 2' anyone...?

I only have music on when I revise or re-work, and then only instrumental, and then only stuff I know that doesn't distract!

Has to be instrumental - my brain gets distracted by lyrics. Some Merzbow noise does the trick!

I'm used to only be able to write, edit, proofread in complete silence but then, well, it got so incredibly bored! So I'm slowly integrating some musical accompaniments but it's got to be pretty chilled out (I don't know about you) I love Jason Mraz, Joshua Radin, Gabrielle Aplin (ever since the John Lewis chrimbo ad - I'm a sucker for JL...) but I've also recently discoveerd Lauren Acquilina. Mind you my playlists are quite repetitive and short that way I think I can zone them out when my brain strikes

Usually Mogwai or the Aphex Twin's Analord EPs for me. Last year I listened to Drokk and Le Voyage dans la Lune a lot (I reviewed those here and here). Unless everyone's out at school or work, I always need something to cover the ambient noise caused by happy children.
