Seems odd for Some Kind of Fairytale by Graham Joyce to be in both novel shortlists. It's clearly a fantasy book and feels like it's taking a spot that could have gone to a more obviously horror themed novel. I supposed it could be argued that distinction is not always easy but in that case why not just have one combined novel award?
Yeah, that does look strange. I can't think it would have been added by the jury as an 'egregious omission', so guess down to the vagaries of the BFS voting system, with some members unsure which category, or maybe liking it so much they put it in both.
The one that surprised me was Chomu not in contention for Best Small Press, as they won it last year and I thought they were going great guns in 2012, so shame they got overlooked.
