Interzone regular Chris Beckett is on the shortlist for the 2009 Edge Hill Short Story Prize for his collection The Turing Test. Chris is competing for the award with well established and high profile exponents of the short story such as Booker winner Anne Enright and Ali Smith. Fingers crossed for Chris.

Just googled "Edge Hill Award for the Short Story" as I want to go along to the award ceremony tomorrow. I got this off Google

Booktrade.info But when I clicked the link Quote: Unfortunately we couldn't find the article you requested. so Murray may have gone out but our man Beckett seems to be in with a good chance.

And it's official: Chris Beckett has won the Edge Hill Prize! Not only the prize itself, but the readers award as well: a clean sweep!
Many congratulations to Chris: well-deserved!

It was a blast! Not only is it good to get short stories recognised with this award, but it's also a win for SF and a win for independent publishing! Makes me wonder if I should have finished Elastic now...

It must be hard to know quite how to feel Andrew. But it's well deserved (if not perfectly timed) recognition for everything you did with EP.

Following Jetse's link, the comment in that article I find particularly telling is:-
"I suspect Chris Beckett winning the Edge Hill Prize will be seen as a surprise in the world of books. In fact, though, it was also a bit of surprise to the judges, none of whom knew they were science fiction fans beforehand."
That's the obstacle much genre fiction has to contend with, and hopefully Chris' win will help to break down those kind of preconceptions.

The Short Review claims to be “the place to find reviews of short story collections and anthologies, old and new, from mainstream publishers and small presses, from lit fiction to crime, horror to science fiction, humour and flash fiction.” So it is vaguely Fixish though it doesn’t seem to cover fiction magazines. It has several interesting postings about the Edgehill Prize including a ‘behind the scenes of’along with coverage of both Chris’s win and Graham Joyce winning the O Henry award. Graham’s fiction has appeared 4 times in IZ
