For the past two weeks I've been listening to the six symphonies of the Danish Composer Carl Nielsen. They are supurb, with 4 and 5 being the generally accepted high-points. This music is positive, life-affirming stuff and must be listened to repeatedly, each time with greater care. Nielsen's slogan was 'Music is Life' or vice versa. They were written at a time when 'philosophies of life' were being thought up by various optimists. I'm no optimist and was not converted, but I do get a sense of a life-force winning out against conflicting tendencies (WW1) in the 4th (1916), and of the unceasing and unstoppable flow of life throughout nature and the universe in the great 5th.
I heard about them from A Danish colleague and can hardly get the 4th's last movement out of my mind. Nor do I wish to do so.

"We Are Only Riders" - The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project.

This is a collection of 16 songs originally written by JLP and found on a demo tape unrecorded. They've been re-imagined and recorded by a mix of artists especially for this CD including Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch, Debbie Harry, The Raveonettes, Mick Harvey and others. There's some repetition (a couple of songs appear multiple times, although this adds to the reinterpretations), but overall makes me want to see out more JLP and Gun Club work.

Great band with 5 concept albums telling a SF story. The singer has written comics and a book to go with it. It's fairly hard yet melodic rock, the singer's voice is quite child like, high but strong. The story itself is called The Armory Wars and is an excellent story.
