At last, one of the finest TV crime shows ever made has appeared on DVD with the first volume release of the original The Untouchables (1959) Season 1. Brian De Palma's well received big screen version notwithstanding Robert Stack's portrayal of the legendary lawman remains definitive as does, in many cases the portryal of various hoodlums, thugs and gangsters by the large supporting cast over the 118 various episodes. Condemned for its violence at the time, but now it all seems relatively modest, The Untouchables succeeds largely through a convincing atmosphere, whether through the famous theme music, reporter Walter Winchell's perfect wise-guy narrative voice introducing each episode, the apt black and white photography, or just the tabloidesque recreation of a dangerous time of guns, molls and speakeasies. Unmissable.
