Just finished Life Of Pi
got me reading to the end, but at the end I had the feeling that the rug had been pulled out from beneath my feet...

Yeah, me too, but I kinda liked that - it still worked and made a lot of sense. (It's also why Shyamalan turned down the movie apparently, because audiences would expect it)
The isalnd with the man-eating fruit however...?

I loved Life of Pi. But yes, that island was all a bit weird, wasn't it!

Did really like the story though. That said, I've not read any other Martel since - anybody here given one a go?
I'm currently reading Lindqvist's Little Star (good but feels a little bit long now) and Palahniuk's Haunted (very dark so far). Also just finished dipping in and out of Crimewave Ghosts and was thrilled to find the story I loved, 'Plainview', has a part two at the end - what a treat! Lots of good stories in there with it, as you'd expect.

I reckon the island was the best bit! Well written and very gripping book but ultimately... perhaps a bit of a vapid message? Religion is all nonsense but you might as well believe in it if it makes you feel better. I think we could have expected a bit better than that after 300 pages.... A shaggy tiger story

I reckon the best Booker winner I've ever read is The Sea by John Banville... a real masterpiece.

Finished "Off the Rails" and loved it. Now halfway through the next in the series, "Bryant & May and The Memory of Blood". Splendid stuff.

Finished the anthology Art From Art which I appeared in last year - an excellent mix of art-themed stories. Picked up "The Getaway", a crime novel by Jim Thompson who I've never read before.

Just read "Hell Train" by Christopher Fowler, and as I watched a couple of "Hellraiser" films last night it was a pretty hellish weekend.

I enjoyed Hell Train (I'm old enough to be properly nostalgic about Hammer Films!) though was amused at the irony of the word "etymologist" appearing as a typo on a couple of occasions.
I hated Life of Pi - the final straw was reading through two pages which was literally an inventory of the contents of the lifeboat.
Currently reading Harbour by John Ajvide Lindqvist which is rambling all over the place in a thoroughly entertaining way. I love his style of writing which is very similar to John Irving, one of my favourite authors.

Fancied a bit of a change, so now reading A Game of Thrones. Good fun, and better than the TV version of course.
Karswell, I loved Harbour - would love to wipe it from my memory and read it again (although there's one scene I don't think will ever leave me, memory wipe or not).

I just skipped those pages. There were a few more like them.
Now reading - Jung Chang, Wild Swans
