Watched this last night and loved it - more darkly fantastical and fairy tale-ish than full-on horror, but played brilliantly on childhood fears. Brrr!

Or maybe it was because I watched it alone in the dark...

Sorry Ali but I hated it. Absolutely loathed it, in fact! There were certainly a few very scary *jump* moments, but I get so angry nowadays with movies where characters do things that they would never ever do in real life and I get too hoarse shouting at the TV screen

I'm afraid I was the same. I loved the setting... and that was it. As for thinking that poor caretaker's injuries were the result of an accident - come on! I'd love to have seen the first five minutes as a full length movie - that was good.

I think perhaps I had (too) high hopes for it and so was disappointed. Still, the reverse is true sometimes - I had no expectations at all for The New Daughter (Kevin Costner in an adaptation of a John Connolly story) and was pleasantly surprised.

I think that's where I get annoyed - the high hopes thing. Or where I think the concept should have been handled so much better than it was (had the same thing watching Another Earth this weekend).

I agree about the caretaker incident, Ray. But for me the last straw was the demon turning out the bathroom light with the long stick...unintentional hilarity
