Michael Bay's Trashformers (as I call it) benefits from an impressive supporting cast (including Jon Voight and John Turturro), capably mixing thrilling drama with lowbrow comedy, but too much cartoon action soon grows wearying, and the predictable teen romance angle receives too much screen time. Overall, the qualities of tone, pacing, and narrative development are extremely variable (although the visual effects are rarely less than stunning) and this has nothing to offer fans of genuinely imaginative sci-fi adventure. It blatantly features numerous 'product placement' scenes and delivers almost non-stop adverts for spin-off merchandise. Will this over-long film help sell more toys than cars (perhaps, for its intended audience, there's not much difference, anyway)?
Score: 5/10.
