Verity Lambert, TV and film producer, died on Thursday, on the eve of the 44th anniversary of the programme she helped to create, Doctor Who. She would have been 72 this coming Tuesday.

As well as Doctor Who, she also produced or executive-produced Adam Adamant Lives!, The Naked Civil Servant, Rock Follies, Widoes, Minder, the 1979 version of Quatermass, Eldorado, GBH and Jonathan Creek. For the big screen her credits included Clockwise and A Cry in the Dark. That's a pretty distinguished record by any standard. (Even Eldorado has its defenders.)

What is interesting, considering how much the Doctor is an "outsider", is that he was the creation of outsiders. None of the key personnel at the BBC involved had come up through the old-boy network. Head of Drama Sydney Newman had been brought in from Canada, the first director of the show Waris Hussein was Asian, and Verity Lambert was a woman in her twenties - in fact the first female producer the BBC ever had.

I was amazed to discover she was only 72! As the person who more or less created modern television, I'd expected her to be in her 90s ...

What an extraordinary life.

What a who's-who of programmes on her CV at Imdb. 'More or less created' is the right phrase. I didn't catch it on the news -- did the BBC even bother to report it?

I caught it on BBC news ... I'm just glad she lived to see Doctor Who's 'Family of Blood', where the name of the Doctor's mother is 'Verity'. Such a shame ...

... and wasn't "John Smith"'s father called Sydney, too?
